Call 2014

Call for personal and post-doctoral research grant applications 2014

The call for personal research grants applications will be open from 18 August to 17:00 (Estonian time) on 19 September 2014.

The call for post-doctoral research applications will be open from 1 September to 17:00 (Estonian time) on 30 September 2014.

The post-doctoral research grant is a research grant that the Estonian Research Council (ETAG) will award to an applicant as a result of an open international competition for the purpose of implementation of a particular research project. The grant includes remuneration of the post-doctoral fellow (27,000 euro annually incl. taxes payable thereon), research-related costs (for an experimental research project – 6,000 euro, for a non-experimental research project – 3,200 euro). The post-doctoral fellows whose employment entails relocation to Estonia from another country or from Estonia to another country can request a non-recurrent relocation support of EUR 6,500. The evaluation committee will assess the justification for that request.

The duration of a post-doctoral research grant may be from 12 to 24 months. ETAG will award both incoming and outgoing research grants. In case of incoming fellows preference is given to applicants who have received Estonian state support for doing their PhD degree abroad.

All together up to 6 grants will be available for the year 2015.

Applications can be submitted only electronically via the Estonian Research Information System ETIS (www.etis.ee). The terms and conditions as well as the guidelines for evaluating the applications are available below.

A notice of opening of the competition will be published on the websites of ETAG (www.etag.ee), the Estonian Research Portal (www.etis.ee), and the EURAXESS Jobs Portal (http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess).

How to apply:

First step: Contact a potential supervisor working in an Estonian R&D institution.

  • Ask the supervisor to contact an administrator of ETIS – the Estonian Research Information System(www.etis.ee) of the R&D institution to obtain your personal ETIS username and password.
  • Fill in the postdoctoral grant application form.
  • Check that all the necessary information is provided, including your supervisor’s CV.
  • Submit the application.
  • The receiving institution will approve and sign electronically the relevant application via ETIS.

Application is considered submitted when both the applicant and the institution have submitted the application before deadline.

Please send your inquiries to Ms Kadri Mäger, e-mail kadri.mager@etag.ee, tel +3727 317 358.

Personal research funding is a contribution to the costs of high-level research and development activities carried out by researchers or small research groups who are employed by an R&D institution. Two types of grant are available:

  • An exploratory research grant is a grant to support innovative, ground-breaking, or high-risk research projects at a high level internationally.
  • A start-up research grant is a grant to support promising young researchers to develop an independent research career, establish their own research team, and start conducting independent research.

The indicative size of a grant is 50 – 70,000 euros.

A Principal Investigator of an exploratory research grant is a person who has been awarded a doctorate in Estonia or who has foreign qualifications equal thereto; and at the time of implementing the research project, is employed full-time at the host R & D institution.

A Principal Investigator of a start-up research grant is a person who has been awarded their first doctorate in Estonia or an equivalent foreign qualification no less than 2 and no more than 7 years prior to the year of applying for the grant. The evaluation committee may, where justified, consider a person who has been awarded their first doctorate in Estonia or equivalent foreign qualification more than 7 years prior to the year of applying for the grant as having met the criteria. In that case, the maximum time elapsed since the award of the first PhD can be extended, but only in certain properly documented circumstances, e.g., maternity leave or leave for national service, etc.; has completed post-doctoral studies (preferably outside of Estonia) after receiving their doctorate in Estonia or equivalent foreign qualification. The evaluation committee may, where justified, consider a person who has not completed post-doctoral studies as the principal investigator of a start-up grant; and is fully employed at the host institution during the realization of the project.

Both grants can last up to 4 years.

ETAG has fixed the amounts of certain budget categories.  For 2015, the staff cost rates are as follows: principal investigator of a start-up grant – 27,000 euro, principal investigator of an exploratory grant – 32,000 euro, members of the research staff – 16,000 euro.
