Extremely tough competition for personal research funding 2016

284 personal research funding applications were submitted to the Estonian Research Council for personal research funding in 2016. 69 applications were submitted for post-doctoral research.
Personal research funding is a contribution to the costs of high-level research and development activities carried out by researchers or small research groups who are employed by a research and development institution.
Support is offered to experienced researchers to carry out innovative, ground-breaking, or high-risk research projects as well as to young researchers to develop an independent research career and establish their own research team.
The total sum applied for personal research funding is 19 million Euros. The call budget is about 3.2 million Euros. Of the 284 applications, 168 are exploratory research grant applications, and 116 start-up research grant applictions. Of the 69 post-doc applications, 29 are incoming and 40 are outgoing.
Currently, the Estonian Research Council is performing the technical check of the submitted applications. Thereafter the applications will be reviewed by external reviewers. The preliminary funding decisions will be made in early Novenber 2015.
